CALOUNDRA ROAD TO SUNSHINE COAST MOTORWAY UPGRADE

For the Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway (CR2SM) project, a Fulton Hogan and Seymour Whyte Joint Venture, Protech delivered the inaugural Diversity Employment Program for the early works on the Bruce Highway Upgrade at the Sunshine Coast. The established milestones meant the program would ensure 12+ months of employment for those completing it, while also providing an opportunity to participate in a range of training and practical construction activities prior to the commencement of major construction works.

About The Project

The CR2SM project involves the upgrade of the Bruce Highway, with 6 lanes of traffic between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway to separate long distance and local traffic for efficient highway functionality.

The upgrade is a critical part of infrastructure development in the region to prepare for growth and expansion, as well as for the prevention of flood impact on the road.

The Diversity Employment Program

With Protech’s purpose to be a positive influence in people’s lives at the forefront of everything we do, the Diversity Employment Program was established. The program focused on creating pathways to ongoing employment for men and women who had a barrier to entry into the workforce.

The program placed a strong emphasis on community engagement to ensure local men and women from diverse backgrounds were given the first opportunity to available roles. With the emphasis being ongoing employment for those not currently employed, Protech also partnered with local Job Active agencies to source local talent.

Utilising the 10-step Protech Certification process, as well as an initial information session, 47 candidates were screened, with 14 field employees selected for the program. These participants completed several units within the Certificate II in Civil Construction qualification, while some participants went on to complete their full traineeships.

In order to ensure its success, the program’s methodology was underpinned by three non-negotiable conditions:

  1. All decisions were made with the ultimate goal being ongoing employment for the field employee.
  2. All funding obtained for the purposes of employment was invested in activities that led to increased diversity employment.
  3. Protech’s brand promise of Quality People Every Time was never compromised.

Leading The Next Generation

Across all of our apprenticeship and traineeship programs, we recognise mentoring and development are key to leading the next generation. Throughout the delivery of this program, our employees were trained and mentored by our National Indigenous & Diversity Manager. Not only did this provide ongoing support, but apprentices and trainees had regular on site contact with Protech to discuss training and development pathways in line with their long-term career aspirations.

The Outcome

The inaugural Diversity Employment Program delivered in conjunction with CR2SM provided real opportunities for our field employees to obtain long-term employment. Many of those who completed the program are still employed with Protech today, working on major projects across South East Queensland that are critical to the evolving infrastructure in the region.
