Dallas Baines drives home from work each day knowing he’s made a difference. As one of Protech’s valued Labourers and Heavy Machinery Operators, he has the exciting opportunity to work on projects that improve Australia’s infrastructure. Dallas enjoys his lifestyle on the Gold Coast, and is proud of where his skills have led him today.

Not everyone can drive on the roads of the place they call home and say they helped create them; but Dallas Baines can. With the support of Protech, Dallas has used his skills as a Labourer and Heavy Machinery Operator to construct major road and bridge projects on the Gold Coast and beyond. This infrastructure keeps Australia moving each day, and Dallas can actually see his work come to life.
“It’s exciting to be part of something big,” Dallas says. “Because I live locally on the Gold Coast, I can point to roads and bridges and say to my kids, ‘I built that.’”
“You do have that pride in your heart for what you’ve achieved, even if it is just a road. You know the blood, sweat and tears that went into it, and can see how you’ve made a difference.”

“I’m from a small coastal town called Stuarts Point, and when I first moved to the Gold Coast, I was going through different labour hire companies. Most of them only put you on for a day or two, but then I found Protech, and I just had jobs whenever I needed them. For example, at one point, I was working on airport runways across the country. I was staying in nice hotel rooms and seeing parts of Australia I hadn’t been to before. Without Protech, I wouldn’t have done that.”

A perfect fit
From playing with toy trucks to driving tractors on his family farm, Dallas knew he would one day earn his title as a Heavy Machinery Operator. He’s proud of the experience he’s gained before and after joining Protech, but says you don’t need to know everything before talking to us.
“I think Protech is a great place to start because they help get your foot in the door. If you’re a good worker and an honest person, they’ll always have time for you and help put you in a position. There’s been places I’ve finished up with but when they have a new project, they’ll call Protech to see if I’m available. That’s a big thing in itself.”
Dallas is currently working on the M1 upgrade, and has taken convenient commuting to a whole new level! His job site is only 800m from his house, which Dallas says fits perfectly with his lifestyle.
“I’m a pretty active person. My kids and I love to do things outdoors – anything from fishing to surfing to camping. That quality time is what matters most.”
Diamond in the rough
As a father of two, job security is important to Dallas. But he’s never had to think twice with Protech.
“I have jobs whenever I need them. If my site shuts down today, I wouldn’t stress because with my resume and the help of Protech, I can walk into a new job site in a few days.”
Dallas loves that each day is something new, whether he’s responsible for driving an excavator or a dump truck. He knows he has great support from other contractors onsite, and from Protech, too. For those interested in joining Dallas on the ride with us, he says you shouldn’t hesitate!
