REMOTE SOLAR FARM
From March 2018 to August 2018, Protech supplied 60 quality field employees for the Collinsville Solar Farm project in North Queensland. One of the largest-scale solar farms in Australia, the $290 million project was constructed with the aim to multiply the amount of sustainable energy produced nationwide.
About The Project
As Australia leans further away from coal and gas to power the country and more into renewables, the Collinsville Solar Farm helps produce sustainable energy, and offers commercial investment in renewable technology.
The solar farm also provides energy consumers better access to solar power, with the federal government estimating it’s ability to power around 13,000 homes.
Local Engagement
Situated three hours outside of Mackay, a drive in, drive out (DIDO) schedule was established due to the remote nature of the project, requiring field employees to work 21 days on and 7 days off.
To attract candidates in order to fill the available roles, Protech North Queensland’s recruitment team put into place our model ‘local jobs for local people’. The initiative established a framework for sourcing local talent that would meet the requirements of the DIDO schedule.

Mobilising Our Workforce
Over the duration of the project, Protech supplied 60 qualified employees, tasked with assisting in the set up and installation of solar panels and cabling. The team included 4 electricians, 45 trade assistants, 1 operator, 9 bus drivers and 1 boilermaker throughout the course of the project.
In addition to our 10-step Protech Certification process, our Account Managers and Recruitment Specialists oversaw the following:
- key account management and communication;
- screening processes;
- candidate expertise suitability; and
- on-site accommodation requirements.

Protech Certified
Protech Certification is an extensive selection process that ensures only the best applicants make it through to client projects. When you see the Protech Certified badge, you can trust that you’re getting the best person for your project.
Co-Creating A Solution
At Protech, we understand that workforce planning is not a one-size-fits-all process, especially on large-scale projects contributing to Australia’s energy sector. At the outset of the project, Protech worked with our client to ensure the workforce strategy in place was suitable for stakeholders, including our field employees.
To meet the objective of successful project completion, Protech Account Managers focused on consistent site visits, which were delivered every week. This ensured a positive team culture, the delivery of safety toolbox talks, and regular communication with our client.
The Outcome
The most challenging aspect of the Collinsville Solar Farm project was the ability to source qualified candidates, due to the remote location and DIDO schedule. Through our ‘local jobs for local people’ initiative, in combination with our Co-Creation strategies, Protech placed reliable, quality field employees who were able to meet their role requirements and support the delivery of the project.
